Kaart van de dag: Skill Borrower!



Skill BorrowerSkill Borrower: een ontzettend leuke, doch soms verwarrende kaart in Magic the Gathering. Gesuggesteerd voor een Kaart van de dag door Duncan ( hier ). Laten we maar eens aan de slag gaan!

Artifact Creature - Human Wizard 1 / 3
Play with the top card of your library revealed.
As long as the top card of your library is an artifact or creature card, Skill Borrower has all activated abilities of that card. (If any of the abilities use that card's name, use this creature's name instead.)

Klinkt in eerste instantie niet zo verwarrend, toch? Skill Borrower "leent" gewoon alle activated abilities (cost : effect) van de bovenste kaart van je deck, mits die kaart een artifact of creature card is.
Echter, tijdens het spelen blijkt dat Skill Borrower toch voor vervelende situaties kan zorgen.

Voorbeeld:
Skill Borrower ligt bij jou op de battlefield. De bovenste kaart van je deck is gereveald; het is een Glassdust Hulk. De Glassdust Hulk heeft de cycling-ability.



Mag je je Skill Borrower nou cyclen of niet?

Official Rulings:

10/1/2008 The only difference between a colored artifact and a colorless artifact is, obviously, its color. Unlike most artifacts, a colored artifact requires colored mana to cast. Also unlike most artifacts, a colored artifact has a color in all zones. It will interact with cards that care about color. Other than that, a colored artifact behaves just like any other artifact. It will interact as normal with any card that cares about artifacts, such as Shatter or Arcbound Ravager.
10/1/2008 Activated abilities contain a colon. They're generally written "[Cost]: [Effect]." Some keywords are activated abilities; they have colons in their reminder text.
10/1/2008 If an effect tells you to draw several cards, reveal each one before you draw it. Skill Borrower will momentarily gain the activated abilities of artifact and creature cards revealed this way, but you won't be able to activate those abilities while the effect is still happening.
10/1/2008 If the top card of your library changes during the process of casting a spell or activating an ability, the new top card won't be revealed until the process of casting the spell or activating the ability ends (all targets are chosen, all costs are paid, and so on).
10/1/2008 If the top card of your library changes while you're activating one of Skill Borrower's activated abilities gained from that card, the ability will still be activated and will resolve normally even though Skill Borrower has lost that ability.
10/1/2008 Skill Borrower may gain activated abilities that it can't use. For example, if the top card of your library is an artifact or creature card with cycling, Skill Borrower will have cycling. However, since cycling can't be activated from the battlefield, this won't have any significant benefit. The same is true for unearth.

Nee dus, je kan je Skill Borrower niet cyclen. Logisch, want cycling kan alleen gebruikt worden in je hand, en niet op de battlefield! Dat de Glassdust Hulk niet op de battlefield ligt is niet relevant: het gaat om de Skill Borrower.

Een andere goede vraag rondom Skill Borrower is het levelen. Stel dat je een level-kaart bovenop hebt liggen, bijvoorbeeld Brimstone Mage. Kan je dan de damage-ability van de Mage gebruiken?
Hieronder is mooi uitgelegd waarom dat niet kan!

Q: If I have a Brimstone Mage on the top of my library, can Skill Borrower use the Mage's damage ability?

A: No. Skill Borrower only borrows activated abilities, and the only activated ability that Brimstone Mage has is "level up 3r." You could use that ability to put level counters on Skill Borrower, but all they'll do on Skill Borrower is to look pretty. The other abilities on Brimstone Mage are static abilities that grant it an activated ability if it is on the battlefield and has a certain number of level counters. Skill Borrower does not borrow static abilities, so it won't get any of those abilities even if it were to accumulate the appropriate number of level counters.



Helaas, hiervan kan je alleen het levelen zelf overnemen

CasualSkill Borrower is een geweldige kaart in Casual, gewoon omdat je er zoveel verrassende dingen mee kan doen! In het deck hier van Kees is dat prima te zien. Skill Borrower kan 8/8 -creatures maken, kan definitief millen met Oona, Queen of the Fae, kan beesten overnemen, enz... Door middel van Island Sanctuary zorg je ervoor dat de kaart die je wilt bovenop blijft liggen, en je ook nog eens een goede verdediging hebt. Mooi gebouwd!



hier nog een deck, wederom met key-card Skill Borrower. Dit deck (gemaakt door Legendary Magicplayer; echte naam onbekend ) gebruikt Skill Borrower eigenlijk precies hetzelfde. Het enige verschil met het deck van Kees is dat in het deck van Legendary het artifact-thema veel duidelijker naar voren komt. Met kaarten als Scourglass en Voltaic Construct wordt er veel meer synenergy gebruikt met de Skill Borrower, iets wat bij Kees weer niet het geval is. Echter, beide decks zien er verschrikkelijk leuk en sterk uit; ik ben benieuwd wie er zou winnen!



TournamentNaar mijn weten wordt Skill Borrower niet gebruikt in Tournament. Ik kan het fout hebben, maar decks die om 1 kaart draaien worden zoiezo bijna niet gespeeld, behalve combo (Ad Nauseam, High Tide, enz..). Skill Borrower is gewoon te fragiel, te makkelijk van af te komen. En zodra dat gebeurt is je boardpositie een stuk slechter. Helaas, maar MTG is hard..
